Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy

If you haven’t heard about KAP and its incredible benefits yet, I have included links for further information below.  This modality is a holistic, psychedelic modality in which ketamine is used as a complement to psychotherapy to help eligible patients get unstuck and experience long-lasting improvement in symptoms, particularly those with a history of trauma, chronic depression and anxiety. My medical partners at Journey Clinical lead a thorough intake process to ensure safety and eligibility.

There is expanding research around how Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) can help eligible patients get unstuck and experience long-lasting improvement in symptoms, particularly those struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD, other mental illnesses or those facing a roadblock in their current therapy. Some of the latest studies have shown truly life-changing results for some patients, and am excited to now offer KAP to my clients should they want to pursue this avenue of care.

After personally experiencing KAP’s transformative effects for myself, my own mental health has improved significantly.  I am more effective with my clients as a result of this experience and have been able to make significant life changes with previously unobtainable ease and clarity.  I have found this modality to be exponentially more effective and efficient in outcomes than any other modality I have treated clients within 25 years of my career.

What is KAP? Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy pairs ketamine treatment with ongoing psychotherapy with a licensed mental health professional, giving eligible patients the opportunity to experience more powerful breakthroughs in therapy. It’s a tool I’ve added to my practice to complement my ever-expanding toolbox of specialties and modalities.

Why I Offer KAP

KAP has the potential to transform lives, and I’m honored to guide clients through this powerful healing process. If you’re curious or ready to explore this path, let’s talk about how it might fit into your therapeutic journey.

What is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy?

  • KAP treatment combines ketamine with therapy. It’s a form of Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy.

  • This is a tool I use in my practice for clients who are seeking deeper breakthroughs in their work with me.

  • KAP can help people experience more frequent breakthroughs and sustained improvement in symptoms. As a therapist, I take on the psychotherapy portion of the experience, and my medical partners at Journey Clinical assess eligibility and prescribe the medicine.

  • KAP is especially effective for depression, anxiety, PTSD - particularly when other treatments haven’t been as effective. By working together, we can unlock new perspectives and make meaningful progress in therapy.

  • KAP can be especially helpful for people who feel ‘stuck’ in regular therapy, or aren’t sure what to talk to their therapist about, or have trouble discussing difficult topics. KAP sessions can help generate content that then you can work with your therapist on together in therapy.

  • Personally, I’ve seen life-changing outcomes in clients and have even experienced the transformative power of KAP myself [if applicable].

  • I support my clients through the entire experience. I work with a team of medical experts at Journey Clinical who will ensure that it’s safe for you to experience KAP.

Benefits of KAP & Scientific Evidence

Faster Progress

KAP often accelerates the therapeutic process compared to traditional talk therapy. Some of our members have described it as “the express elevator”

Emotional Release

Many patients report feeling lighter, with a sense of relief from deep pain.

New perspectives

Ketamine helps uncover insights and address patterns that were previously difficult to access.

Quick Relief from Symptoms

One of the biggest advantages of ketamine therapy is its ability to provide fast relief from symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mood disorders. Unlike traditional antidepressants that can take weeks to start working, ketamine often delivers noticeable results within hours or days.

Deeper Emotional Processing

Ketamine helps create an altered state of consciousness, which can allow people to tap into deep emotions and experiences that might be difficult to access through regular talk therapy. This can lead to significant breakthroughs, helping individuals confront and heal from unresolved trauma.

Promoting Neuroplasticity

Ketamine has been shown to encourage neuroplasticity, which is the brain's ability to form new neural pathways. For those dealing with depression or anxiety, this means that ketamine may help “retrain” the brain, making it more adaptable and better able to cope with stress and emotional challenges.

Increased Engagement in Therapy

Many people find that ketamine-assisted therapy helps them engage more fully with their therapist and the therapeutic process itself. The effects of ketamine can create a sense of distance from usual thought patterns, offering clearer insights and helping individuals look at their challenges from a new perspective.

Long-Term Emotional Growth

When combined with psychotherapy, ketamine has the potential to create lasting positive changes by shifting thought patterns and emotional responses in a sustainable way. This can lead to long-term improvements in mental health.

Fewer Side Effects

Compared to traditional medications, ketamine tends to have fewer and less severe side effects. For many patients, it provides a safer and more effective option, especially when other treatments haven’t worked.

How Does Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy Work and What can Clients Expect?

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy consists of a sequence of preparation, dosing, andintegration sessions.

Preparation Therapy Session

  • Before the dosing session, we’ll meet to set intentions and prepare for the experience.

  • We will review all the steps that go into the dosing session so that you feel confident going into the session.

  • It’s important to go into the session with an open mind, so we will try not to set firm expectations.

Dosing Session

  • Sessions last 1–3 hours and can be in-person or remote.

  • You’ll self-administer your vitals using a blood pressure monitor, and the ketamine lozenges, then you’ll lie down in a cozy, comfortable setting with an eye mask and headphones, and explore the thoughts or emotions that arise.

  • The effects of the ketamine last about 45 minutes “round trip”

  • Most patients find the effects pleasant, and report feeling “far from their body”

  • Many people report having unique emotional or visual experiences that differ from normal, everyday thoughts. This can give you a break from habitual thoughts and gain a new perspective on traumatic situations.

  • I’ll be present to support you, ensuring you feel safe and grounded.

  • After the session, we’ll process your experience and identify insights to carry forward into our work together

Integration Session

  • We will schedule an integration session to take place within 24-72 hours of the dosing session, when your neuroplasticity will be most enhanced, which will give you the chance to deepen the insights gained and start applying them to your life.

  • Integration is the most important part - it’s where the most lasting changes happen.

  • In an integration session, we will use tools that I use in my regular therapy sessions.

Follow Up Sessions

We’ll typically plan 6–8 sessions for optimal results, with ongoing medical consultations through Journey Clinical for prescription refills and outcome monitoring.

Their medical team can also serve as your prescriber for ongoing regular non-ketamine medication management.

How Does KAP Feel?

The effects of ketamine, which most patients find pleasant, last for approximately 45 minutes. These effects can make you feel “far from”your body, and facilitate shifts in perception that can often feel expansive in nature. Many people report having unique emotional or visual experiences that can give you a break from habitual thoughts and gain a new perspective on traumatic situations. Your motor and verbal abilities will be reduced, so you’ll be lying down in a comfortable position during the experience. Once these effects subside, your psychotherapist will spend the remainder of your appointment giving you space to process and discuss your experience. While it may feel hard to articulate what happens during the experience, patients feel like the insights gained are clear.

Safety and Side Effects

  • Your safety is a top priority in these sessions and we’ll closely monitor you throughout the session. Ketamine is a well-established, safe medication when used responsibly. Common short-term side effects include nausea, dizziness or a feeling of disconnection, which are typically mild and temporary. This is why we have you lay down during the experience with the eye mask. With Journey Clinical’s rigorous safety protocols and my support, you’ll have a safe and effective experience.

  • The thorough evaluation process means that if there is concern about your safety, you won’t be eligible for treatment. The Journey Clinical team will not prescribe to you if it will be unsafe for you, and they do turn people down who do not meet the eligibility criteria. If you aren’t eligible, your intake will be refunded to you.

Commitment and Collaboration

  • KAP is not a quick fix; it’s one part of a larger mental health journey. The ketamine experience itself is just one piece—the real transformation happens when we integrate those experiences into your life. Your active participation is essential for lasting change.

  • Research shows that combining psychedelics like ketamine with psychotherapy yields significantly better outcomes compared to using these medications on their own.

Cost of Treatment & Insurance

Journey Clinical makes Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy more affordable than most other ketamine treatment options.

Pricing consists of two components: medical and psychotherapy.

Our preparation and integration sessions will be billed the same as a regular therapy session. (ex. They will be the same price as your regular sessions, or we will bill them to insurance the same way). The dosing session is an extended session. The cost of a KAP dosing session with me is [insert amount].

Depending on your insurance, the medical consultations with Journey Clinical’s team as well as our therapy sessions could be covered by insurance [if applicable - see providers here]. In-network costs depend on your specific plan and other factors like your deductible and co-pay.

For out-of-network benefits, Journey Clinical can provide you with a superbill to submit to your insurance for all sessions, to get a portion of the costs covered (sometimes 70-80%)

Medical Management Costs

Out of pocket costs
  • Journey Clinical Medical Cost for First Time Patients: initial evaluation, treatment plan, and medication for up to 2 sessions: $347*. May be eligible for partial insurance coverage depending on your plan.

  • Ongoing Treatment -  Follow-up Medical Consultation & medication for 4-6 additional sessions: $313. May be eligible for partial insurance coverage depending on your plan.

Journey Clinical’s medical team can also serve as your doctor for your regular prescriptions and psychiatric medication management and we will work together on your progress. Journey Clinical Ongoing Psychiatric Medication Management Sessions: $250

Psychotherapy Costs

Journey Clinical offers information on insurance reimbursement, out of network reimbursement and psychotherapy pricing costs here: Journey Clinical Insurance Options

The KAP Psychotherapy Protocol is an investment in lasting improved mental health - often saving thousands from future therapeutic needs.  It requires commitment to a lengthy protocol which requires a time commitment of up to 4 hours/week over the course of 6-8 weeks in the least.

It requires 3 components: a Prep Session, 6-8 dosing sessions (or more) which last approximately 3 hours and can be completed remotely, followed by an hour integration/psychotherapy session following each dose.  The 6-8 dose protocol is based on scientific research showing the most impactful results after this many dosing sessions and integration.  Integration post session is a requirement of the KAP Protocol and serves to build on the impactfulness and effectiveness of the KAP dosing for longer lasting results.

The private pay cost of the KAP Protocol with a Psychotherapist would include the following:

Initial Psychotherapy Intake to gather Biosychosocial History ($175) Prep Session ($150) + 3 hours observation/monitoring support sessions ($450 each, minimum required is 6 sessions (up to $2700) and follow up Integration Sessions $150/each x 6 = $900). Total cost for this KAP Protocol without insurance support would be close to a $4000 investment over the course of treatment.

However, Resilience Coach, LLC acknowledges that these are often prohibitive for most clients seeking KAP therapy, particularly those who could benefit the most from this modality.  There are additional options to reduce costs significantly that can be discussed

I don’t know if I can afford KAP

KAP is an investment

“I understand it can feel like a big investment. I encourage you to consider the cost of ongoing therapy and other treatments, both financially and emotionally, when they aren’t giving you the results you need. KAP can accelerate breakthroughs, potentially saving you time and money in the long run. We also can explore options like self-guided sessions or group KAP, which are more affordable. Some even think of it as the cost of a vacation for your mental health."  — Dr. Ingmar Gorman

“We know cost can be a barrier, so there are ways to reduce expenses. If you’re comfortable with it, self-guided dosing means shorter check-ins and a smaller fee, or group KAP can split costs among a few people.”

Insurance may cover some aspects of treatment

Journey Clinical offers insurance coverage for the medical appointments and also provides superbills for out-of-network reimbursement. Some patients get 70-80% of their costs covered. Check out this FAQ page: https://journeyclinical.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/28002696219028-Insurance-FAQs

Some KAP modalities are more affordable than others

Group KAP sessions can be less expensive, since the therapist’s time is divided between clients. Another option is to explore self-guided sessions, where we still have dedicated preparation and integration sessions together, and then check in before/after the KAP dosing session, but you’ll go through the dosing procedure with chaperone supervision.

Addressing Common Questions

How is this different from other ketamine treatments?
  • In recent years as more research has come out supporting ketamine as a mental health treatment, a couple of different options have popped up. You may have heard of local ketamine clinics, or companies that support at-home treatment.

  • The gold-standard of care within psychedelic research is that the treatment takes place within the context of psychotherapy. This means that surrounding the actual experience of the medicine, there are always preparation and integration sessions.

  • I built KAP into my practice so that I can support you through the experience, and be there to help you process the insights and how they are going to affect your life and relationships into the future.

Am I a good candidate?

Not everyone is, so we’ll carefully assess your needs together with Journey Clinical’s medical team to ensure this approach is right for you.

Is this a cure?

While KAP can be a deeply profound experience, it’s not an instant cure. Instead, it’s a way of accelerating and enhancing the work we’re doing together in therapy. It can support long-lasting changes, but regular therapy and other lifestyle adjustments are also important for ongoing progress.

Is KAP legal?

Yes, ketamine is an FDA approved dissociative anesthetic drug, legal in all 50 states and used in hospital settings for surgery and pain management since 1970. It is a top 10 essential medicine according to the WHO. It is widely prescribed off-label for mental health.

What does it mean for a drug to be prescribed off-label?

An off label prescription of a drug is when a licensed medical professional decides that prescribing a drug for a use other than that which is on the label of the drug to treat a condition is appropriate. An example would be prescribing aspirin to thin the blood in the case of high cholesterol or using allergy medication as an anti-anxiety treatment. Roughly 20% of all prescriptions in the US are off-label.

What’s the difference between sublingual ketamine, Spravato nasal spray and intramuscular or intravenous treatment?
  • Spravato nasal spray is a different type of ketamine molecule (r-ketamine) which has been FDA approved for the treatment of treatment-resistant depression and requires the patient to be in-office a few times a week

  • Intramuscular or intravenous treatment requires a medical professional on-site to administer it

  • Intravenous has 100% bioavailability, intramuscular is around 98% bioavailability, intranasal is about 50% bioavailability, and sublingual, depending on whether you spit or swallow ranges between 10-20% bioavailability.

  • If you’re having an intravenous or intramuscular route of administration, you’re reaching the peak of the experience within 5 minutes, whereas with sublingual it takes about 20 minutes. So it is a ‘softer’ experience with sublinguals, which is why it’s safe to have patients self-administer it.

What are the risks?

Ketamine is generally very safe but not suitable for everyone (e.g., those with uncontrolled high blood pressure or certain personality disorders). Journey Clinical conducts a thorough screening process to ensure safety, and if needed, works with your other doctors or medical professionals.

What about Matthew Perry's death and ketamine?
  • Recent headlines have raised concerns about ketamine misuse. However, therapeutic ketamine use is vastly different from unsupervised use. Journey Clinical’s protocol ensures safe, supervised dosing, significantly mitigating risks.

Our approach to care includes:

  • KAP is done solely in the context of a therapeutic alliance between us, supported by an entire team of highly trained and experienced medical professionals.

  • During Journey Clinical’s rigorous intake process, they communicate the potential risks and side effects of ketamine and screen for a variety of conditions in a patient’s medical history, including those with a history of substance abuse, to make informed decisions on KAP eligibility..

  • Our dosing protocols are designed to use ketamine as an adjunct to therapy and would never come close to approaching anesthetic levels.

  • Finally, the requirement to book a follow-up consultation to receive a new prescription is designed, in part, as a safety measure to assess if there is any risk of prescribing more ketamine..

  • We remain confident that our protocols, policies, and procedures make it extremely unlikely that an equivalent scenario could occur in our collaborative care model.

I remain very confident in Journey Clinical's collaborative care model, protocols, policies, and procedures. I encourage you to read their commitment to patient safety here: https://www.journeyclinical.com/ourpatientcommitment/

What if my employer / life insurance finds out?

Ketamine therapy is legal, safe, and supported by numerous studies showing its quick, effective outcomes. This can make it appealing to insurers, and companies like Enthea are even working to have ketamine-assisted therapy covered by employer insurance. Our medical team can also write a letter to your employer if needed.
